Liverpool Tunnel 10K

Tunnel 10K returns again after successful 2006 event. After a four year break there is clearly light at the end of the Wallasey Tunnel!

INITIAL DELAY DELIVERS A SURPRISE TURNOUT WITH NEARLY DOUBLE THE NUMBERS TAKING PART ON REVISED SEPTEMBER DATE.

It was great to see the return of the Tunnel 10K event after a gap of four years last September. The main topic of conversation on the day has shifted from why it was postponed to just how long the Egremont promenade seemed or how steep the Tunnel exit was. Many of those taking part had run in previous years and those that hadn’t weren’t quite sure what to make of this unusual run.

The return was prompted by the now retired Tunnels Executive, John Gillard, and thanks must go to him for having the vision to bring back this most popular event. That it went ahead at all is thanks to all concerned with the event delivery. Concerns were raised about road safety issues between the Tunnel exit and the Wallasey Ferry but ultimately all the concerns were addressed and the Tunnel 10K returned.

The day itself was ideal for running, if a touch warm, and with a breeze behind the runners on the promenade between the Wallasey Ferry Terminal and the end of Egremont Promenade. It meant the last two miles literally flew past – even though the finish line never seemed to be getting any closer for most people! Nevertheless, now that the event is back in the calendar it is likely to prove a big hit again with local runners in particular.

For 2007, as in 2006 there is no need to make amendments to the original course as it works well – so it should remain the same for the forseeable future. Some runners seemed reluctant to take part in the Tunnel 10K because they thought it would be claustrophobic or would smell of petrol fumes!! To those people I would say that Mersey Tunnels do an excellent job with cleaning before the event and you should have a go this year. You never know, you just might like it.
