Liverpool Run For Fun Day
Focus on enjoyment as Under 15′s have the field to themselves for a day. Kids as young as four racing around Sefton Park and not an adult to get in the way.
WITH CHILDREN’S OBESITY VERY MUCH IN THE POLITICAL SPOTLIGHT MERSEYSIDE KIDS DISMISS THE IDEA THAT THEY ARE ALL LAZY AND OVERWEIGHT!
It is easy to take the view that children these days are all the same. They spend far too long on computers, eat the wrong food and are generally lazy. This might well be the case for some – but none of them were at the first Run For Fun Day!
The day has been especially devised to encourage children under 15, under 12 and under 9 to take part in their own fun runs over 3, 2 and 1 kilometre distances respectively. There is also a 1 mile fun for any age just so the adults don’t feel left out! Whilst there was clearly an element of competition amongst some of the young runners at the inaugural event , the day was very firmly about enjoyment. As well as the races around the Review Field in Sefton Park there was also activity provided by Liverpool Community Games and local American footballers who entertained the kids with their own short game and obstacle course.
All the children taking part received a medal and a t shirt and then watched to see if their parents could do any better in the 1 mile fun run. Needless to say the kids put their parents in the shade! This year Sportslinx and Liverpool Active City, both Liverpool City Council initiatives, will be backing the Run For Fun Day to help raise the profile of the sport and also to encourage participation in such events at an early age.
Taking part is the key to getting children active and if they enjoy the day into the bargain then they are much more likely to come back. So Run For Fun day is back again this year and with the increasing success of the Bully Busters Fun Run at the Women’s 10K event and the increasing numbers taking part in the Mini Dash at the Santa Dash event who can say that Merseyside kids are anything other than ready to give everything when asked!
