Gok Wan (How To Look Good Naked) makes a surprise visit to the event to start the race.
The weather was exceptionally kind to all took part in the Women's 10K yesterday - as long as you don't mind running in fantastic sunshine! It felt like the hottest day of the year so far and it seemed the ladies who took part took it in their stride. The spectators didn't mind it!
The race even had a surprise celebrity turn up to start the 10K and 5K event. Gok Wan of the Channel 4 Programme How To Look Good Naked was in Liverpool filming in the afternoon and was kind enough to come along and get the race started. He commented.. "It's amazing to see so many ladies taking part. I never imagined runs like this were so popular with women - and don't they all look fantastic!"
A big vote of thanks must go to all the volunteer helpers who were brought in at short notice to manage the finish area. Support from Penny Lane Striders was fantastic with thirty of their members tuning up to help on the day.
Wallasey A.C. and Liverpool Harriers were also well represented. Merseyside County Officials really pulled out the stops to ensure the race went off smoothly.
It was particularly pleasing that the day went well as the preparations were hampered somewhat by the withdrawal of sponsorship just weeks before the race to the equivalent of £4 per entry. (This is the reason the electronic timing had to be withdrawn this year.) Add to that the problems caused by the damage to the start / finish area by the recent Circus visit AND having to contend with the ongoing repair work in the park itself it was certainly more of a challenge to deliver this year.
Anyway well done to all those who took part yesterday.
RESULTS WERE NOT TAKEN for the 5K as it is officially classed as a FUN RUN.
PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED to the first 10 in the 10K as well as winners in the vets categories. These will be awarded when the positions are confirmed.
